Ambujerba

Ambujerba (b. 1992) is an artist based in Almaty whose practice spans ceramics, painting, performance, video, and collage. His works often draw from fragments of childhood memory, half-forgotten feelings, as well as a conflicting mix of innocence and surrealism found in early Soviet psychedelic cartoons, contrasted with the stylistic influences of mid-1990s TV animation.

An important influence on his early thinking was Alexander Brener, whose radical approach to performance and actionism shaped Ambujerba’s interest in art as direct provocation and intervention into public spaces. In more recent years, however, his practice has shifted toward portraiture, exploring psychological depth and intensity playfully engaging with abstract and irrational..

The artist  has presented his work in a number of solo and group exhibitions and residencies, including BLA BLA LAB: ART AS WRITING (Esentai Gallery, Almaty, 2019), QWAS (Vzletnaya, Almaty, 2017; later at New Media Lab as a part of Astana Contemporary Art Centre at Expo 2017, supported by Garage Contemporary Art Museum), and the Worship – Dinner Performance at Ars Electronica Festival (2020). His recent exhibitions also include a solo titled Takhirname at Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture in 2022 and duo show Kokomba at Egin Art Space in 2024 made in collaboration with his then partner Kokonja.

Selected private and public collections include TOVA foundation, Eurasian Cultural Alliance, Private Collections in Kazakhstan and Italy.
