Gulnur Mukazhanova

Gulnur Mukazhanova (b. 1984, Semey, Kazakhstan) is a Berlin-based artist whose practice reinterprets traditional Central Asian materials such as felt and brocade. By subverting their conventional roles in domestic and decorative contexts, she transforms them into complex installations, as well as props for photo and video works. In her art, the focus shifts from materiality to performativity, capturing fabric and fiber in states of transition and transformation.

Mukazhanova often reflects on Kazakhstan, a country itself in a constant process of change, as a lens through which to consider broader questions of globalization and identity politics.

Mukazhanova’s work was a centerpiece at the inauguration of Tselinny Center of Contemporary Culture and the performance Barsakelmes in the autumn 2025. Her other recent exhibitions include The Wind Makes The Sky: La Biennale di Venezia on the Traces of Marco Polo at Ca’ Giustinian, Venice (2024); Eluding Capture: Three Artists From Central Asia at MAA MoCA, Massachusetts (2024); transfeminism, Chapter IV: Care and Kinship at Mimosa House, London (2024). The artist has also participated in the art residency at Centre for Heritage Arts & Textile in Hong Kong in 2023 as well as presented her work at the group exhibition Clouds, Power and Ornament - Roving Central Asia curated by Slavs and Tatars, Alexandra Tsay, You Mi, and Wang Weiwei.

Mukazhanova’s artworks are part of the private and public collections including Fondazione 107, Turin, Italy, Momentum, Berlin,Germany, TOVA Foundation, Geneva, Switzerland, La Metive, Moutier-d'Àhun, France.
